Artplan Graphics and Paul Cockram — a brief history

2017
Artplan Graphics publishes the first Romantic Country Weddings magazine, again with the help of Lyn Cram’s advertising sales skills.
2016
Lyn Cram came on board to sell ads on the BWD magazine and help put it on a sustainable economic footing.
2012
Started BWD magazine to promote the life and culture in the Braidwood region.
2008-2015
Elected, then re-elected to Palerang Council until the council was abolished by the NSW State Government in the amalgamation debacle.
2007-08
Commenced writing a weekly column ‘Time & Energy’ for the Braidwood Times.
2007
Climate change now being the most pressing issue for everone, I worked with local farmers and scientists to help rehydrate our landscape. A video record of Natural Sequence Farming methods was made using Mulloon Creek, Baramul Horse Stud, Tarwyn Park and Martin Royds’ Jillamatong as examples.
2006
Working from Mongarlowe by email and local contact in desktop publishing. Compiling video sequences from the Majors Creek Music Festival.
2005
Moved to Mongarlowe with Alison, Tom and Leo. Produced video for the Two Fires festival and other town events in and around Braidwood.
2004
Received a grant from the Northern Territory Library Service, via the TC Town Council, to archive selected video from 1997 to 2004 into a town record on DVD for the Town Library. A set of 5 DVDs called Tennant Creek Life was the end product.
2000
The new century saw a move into video production and editing with short videos made for Aboriginal organisation in Tennant Creek about health issues as well as some current affairs.
1998
Started the Barkly News Pictorial, a monthly magazine about life in that remote part of the Northern Territory.
1996
Moved to Tennant Creek permanently with Alison, Tom and new son Leo and took up my equipment to set up Artplan Graphics once again.
1994
Went to Tennant Creek with my partner Alison Alder and new son Tom for six months and worked freelance for the Tennant & District Times and Julalikari Council.
1991
Set up Artplan Graphics as a ‘state of the art’ production studio using the new desktop technology to produce colour separations and film planning on the Mac for all our clients so that we could monitor the quality of their jobs from concept right up to the printing plates stage.
1885
Worked at Redback Graphics art workshop in Sydney where I helped with the change-over to Macintosh from the traditional artwork and typesetting methods. Worked with Michael Callaghan to produce the Condoman character for the Commonwealth Health Dept and on the May Day series of posters for the Public Service Union, the classroom manuals for Film Australia’s Australia and many other projects.
1984
Worked with the Combined Railways Cultural Committee, including Brian Dunnett and Russ Hermann to produce an exhibition of rail workers’ cultural history. The exhibition comprises 30 large panels of photos, poems and stories and is still touring the country.
1982-83
Did the layouts and production for the Wine & Spirit Buying Guide in Sydney. Drank far too much of the free tasting wine and had to leave when the magazine ended up being owned by Larry Pickering.
1981
Went to England to see Thatcher’s Britain.
1976
Bought a small offset press and started Movement Media. Formed with friends, the Time & Energy Collective which produced a magazine of the same name.
1972-83
Worked in the book publishing and magazine business, some of the time on the payroll and sometimes as a freelance designer and production manager for a variety of Sydney clients.
1971
Worked with Eric Beecher when he started Inside Football, a weekly paper about Aussie Rules footy.
1968
Started in the publising industry at Modern Magazines, where Eric Beecher, also 17, had talked them into starting Australia’s first cricket magazine, Australian Cricket.
